Mixed media canvas with buttons

Simon Says Stamp and Show -challenge called for buttons, and I totally fell in love with the canvas made by Tracy Evans. I had to try a canvas of my own! Here's what I came up with:

The canvas measures 20x20 cm. I started out by gessoing it, and then adhering white tissue paper over the whole thing, all crumbled up:

I painted the background with some Vintage Photo Distress Paint with a wet paintbrush, stamped on the edges with some Archival Ink in Coffee with Unity Stamp's Layers of Life -june kit and added some structure with Liquitex Light modeling paste and Tiny circles template from the Crafter's workshop.

I layered on some more light modeling paste and arranged my buttons on top of that. After they were dried in place, I went over the bright red buttons with multiple layers of gesso.

I sprayed the buttons with Dylusions ink in Melted chocolate and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Sand. This pretty much didn't adhere, so I went on to paint the buttons with Distress Paints in Vintage photo, Brushed pewter and Antiqued bronze. From here on I kinda forgot to take process photos, so these are from the finished canvas:

I stamped with the Layers of life -kit and Stazon ink in Stazon in Timber brown, as well as Urban Stamps Time Pieces stamp. These I ripped and adhered to the edges and corners of the canvas. On top of this I pounced some Antiqued bronze Distress Paint.

I adhered some cream colored ribbon to the canvas and painted it with Distress paints and black acrylic paint. The background is also in many places painted with Distress paints to make the color more intence.

I used Tim Holtz diecuts to make the pocket watch and wings, then stamped Bo Bunny Timepiece-set on the tissue paper and adhered it to the pocket watch. Wings are diecut from corrugated cardboard, and in the middle of the pocket watch is a small clock part.

In the end I sprayed over the buttons with Tattered Angels Glimmer mists in Slate and the whole canvas with white Perfect Pearls mists.

Mojo Monday #296

My favorite challenge blog is absolutely Mojo Monday. I often go back to old entries just to find layout inspiration, as I am bad in coming up with layouts myself. Here is this week's sketch:

Suosikkihaasteblogini on ehdottomasti Mojo Monday. Käytän usein vanhoja luonnoksia pohjana uusille korteille, kun en oikein itse saa aikaiseksi tasapainoisia kokonaisuuksia. Tässä on tämän viikon luonnos:

I got some corrugated cardboard from a packaging recently, and I was burning to try it. The papers are from the Prima Engraver 6x6 -pad. Some metal brads and washi tape as embellishments and layering with 3D-pads. Basically everything is distressed from the edges and colored with Distress Inks.

Tim Holtz's 12 tags of 2013 - june

At Tim Holtz's blog there's a 12 tags of 2013 tutorial challenge, which I only recently came across. I haven't played much with my Distress-products other than plain stamping and coloring with the ink-tool, so the tag-challenges are a great way to experiment.

I did the background with Forest Moss (paint), Vintage Photo (ink pad) and Antiqued Bronze (stain). As a stamp I used the suitcase stack from the Time Travellers - stamp set and stamped it with Coffee colored Archival Ink as I wanted a softer look instead of using black.

Actually the background in the picture above ended up being the back of the tag, cause I messed up the stamping on it. Here's try 2 on the other side and the colored image:

For the background I used Frayed Burlap, Peeled Paint and Vintage Photo ink pads and the Vilda Stamp image is stamped with Versa Fine Onyx Black. The harlequin background stamp I colored with Rusty Hinge marker - I love the way it turned out and really need to get this color as an ink pad as well! The handwriting stamp is also stamped in with Rusty Hinge.

The image was colored with Vintage Photo, Rusty Hinge and Wild Honey markers, with shading in Pumice Stone. I used my water brush to lift up some Antiqued Bronze paint from my craft mat to color in the buckles and hinges in the suitcases for a metallic effect. Somehow I also managed to get a huge blotch in the middle of the image - but hey, let's say it's a design feature... I ripped the watercolor paper from all edges as the image was so large.

Here's the finished tag:

And here's the back of the tag, also known as "the first try":

I stamped the bottom left corner first with the Coffee Archival Ink, and it didn't show up enough, so I decided to do another try with a darker color, and of course they didn't line up at all. Also the Forest Moss stamping at the top didn't look nice when layered on top with the stamped image.

A close-up of the bottom left corner - I really love that stamp from Vilda Stamps! It has clockwork, gears and flourishes all in one.

Another "oops" in the upper right corner: I managed to stamp the writing upside down... Not that it matters, but I ended up drawing an arrow pointing up on the back of the cling foam on the stamp to avoid similar fails in the future :P

Here's most of the stuff I used:
